Sangria! Sangria!

This is a GREAT option for a specialty cocktail at your wedding. It's a pretty summer drink, too, and looks awesome in a glass punch bowl or pitcher!

1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate
1/3 cup orange juice
1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
1/2 cup triple sec
1 lemon, sliced into rounds
1 orange, sliced into rounds
1 lime, sliced into rounds
1/4 cup white sugar (optional)
8 maraschino cherries
2 cups carbonated water (optional)

Directions

In a large pitcher or bowl, mix together the brandy, lemon juice, lemonade concentrate, orange juice, red wine, triple sec, and sugar. Float slices of lemon, orange and lime, and maraschino cherries in the mixture. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor. For a fizzy sangria, add club soda just before serving.

We promised our lovely followers a similar recipe to the Pomegranate Mojito we had a few weeks back, here at Grand Volute. We can't give the exact recipe out, because, well... it's that good! Here is a similar recipe, however, provided by our very good friends at Bacardi. :)

Pomegranate Mojito!

12 fresh spearmint leaves
1/2 lime
1 1/2 ounces Bacardi Superior Rum
1 ounce pomegranate juice
2 tablespoons simple syrup*
Club soda
Lime wedge, for garnish

Muddle mint leaves and lime in a shaker. Cover with rum, pomegranate juice and simple syrup. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with lime wedge and sprigs of mint.

Makes 1 drink.

*To make simple syrup, mix 1 part sugar and 1 part water. Heat in a pan until the sugar dissolves.

(For legal purposes... We do not condone underage or excessive drinking. Take it easy, people!)

Can you believe that we are into July already? It seems that just a few short weeks ago we were sliding around on the icy Michigan winter roads. I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer weather. July's official flower is the larkspur, definitely a flower that isn't often incorporated into wedding themes. It's a beautiful flower, however, and can easily be incorporated into centerpieces and flower arrangements.

Happy Father's Day to all of our lovely dad friends!! We want to focus today on the father's role in a wedding ceremony. Most brides choose to have their father's walk down the aisle-- in fact, most dream about that moment as much as they dream about kissing their new companion at the end of the service. Dad's are also invited into a father and daughter dance, during most receptions, and are also often to prepare a toast for the happy couple, as well. Those are all pretty typical ideas, however. What about some more unique roles that dad can play in the wedding experience?

Many dads are simply waiting to be invited. Invite dad to help pick out cake, flowers, and invitations. Maybe he isn't so excited about those things? Invite him to help out with the groom's duties-- have him assist in picking out tuxes, his daughter's ring, and honeymoon destinations!

Many men laugh at the fact that the father's duty is simply to simply suffer through giving his daughter away, but the fact of the matter is, that the "suffering" goes away, when he is included! Give him some jobs! He will love you for it (believe it or not!)

Outside DIY Wedding-- Chair Ribbons!

Here at Grand Volute, we are able to host outdoor weddings, and will even provide the chairs for all of your guests. They're white chairs, and are classy by themselves, but, unfortunately, chair covers don't work well for them. But hold on a second! This is even better!

Decorating each chair with coordinating ribbons really spices up the outdoor setting, and looks absolutely wonderful when the wind blow a bit! They're easy-- simply loop them around the back of each chair, and ribbon can be SO cheap! Even cheaper than chair covers. :)

Now, I totally understand the appeal of having uniform colors for the bridal party, but this bride chose to allow her bridal party to express themselves a little more. She assigned a color to each person, and simply went with it! Each person had their own color, and that was that! Flowers? What ever color coordinates with their assigned color! Super fun, cheap (!!) and unique!

Happy Memorial Day-- A Love Story

The war was in full force and Arnold Lopez Gray had enlisted in the Army. After graduating from the Air Forces Navigation School in Texas on April 22, 1943, he married Hazel on July 26th 1943. It was shortly after their marriage he was sent overseas to fly combat missions against the Germans. Little did he know on his 10th mission he would have a story worth repeating for the rest of his life…
His plane was shot down over the North Sea by the Germans, and although he survived the attack he was plucked out of the icy waters by a German U-boat. He had become a P.O.W. in December 1943.
Hazel, a new bride received news of his failed mission, but nothing more. The telegram she received simply said, “Lt. Arnold L. Gray is reported missing in action.”
She had to wait until March 15, 1944, to hear that he was indeed a prisoner of war in a German camp. Actually this ended up being quite a blessing, as the German camp took excellent care of the prisoners, unlike the Concentration Camps. Unknown to the Nazis, Arnold had taken German in high school for three years. He was able to listen each day to the communiques broadcast in German over the loudspeakers. He would in turn, translate the current war updates for his fellow inmates keeping them well informed of the progression of the war. He was aptly given the name “Scoop” for his service.
After 18 months living life at a snail’s pace somewhere in Germany, the camp was liberated as the war came to a victorious end for the American prisoners of war. Arnold had survived his long captivity, and would soon be reunited with his bride.
This is his letter from Barth, Germany, dated May 10, 1945:

Sweetheart,
At last I can write you and say just what I please. I don’t know whether this will reach you before I get home, but it’s worth taking the chance. You cannot realize the joy I have experienced at being liberated, and the prospects of being with you soon. The Germans pulled out of here on April 30th, and we took over. The Russians arrived on May 2. Since then we have been impatiently waiting to get out of here…
…It has been a long time and you have not been out of my thoughts for one minute. I’ll close now, sweetheart, hoping and praying that we will be together very soon for all time. I love you with all my heart.

Arnold

They were reunited and lived a long, happy life together. Their final years were lived in Florida – a state they grew to love as much as their native Rhode Island. Although separated by death in 2001 – they have been reunited together in their final resting place at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Kate is envied by many, but can you really imagine having royal in-laws?
"I think there's almost a maternal bond between Camilla and the soon-to-be Princess Catherine," ABC News' royal contributor Duncan Larcombe said of Middleton's future-stepmother-in-law, Camilla Parker Bowles. "There's a genuine friendship there."
When William was away on his recent trip to Australia, Camilla and Prince Charles invited Kate to the ballet.
Also, a short while back, Kate and Camilla were spotted lunching together. It was a very long lunch and full of wedding discussions.
A fellow diner heard someone say: "We can't have trumpets, the ceiling is too high."
Sometimes, Prince Charles' wife surprises us all. For example, her reaction to the engagement:
"It's the most brilliant news" Camilla said. "I'm just so happy for both of them. They are so happy. It's wicked!"
Prince Charles, we hear, is also very fond of Miss Middleton.
"I was quite nervous about meeting William's father," Kate said, "but he was very, very welcoming, very friendly, it couldn't have gone easier really for me."
And Charles has been helping Kate with wedding planning.
"You know he's over the moon, actually," little brother Prince Harry said when interviewed by ABC News on his recent partial trek to the North Pole.
"He's had a lot to do with the wedding, which is really really nice. And is so unbelievably busy yet he's managed to make time to help Kate out with the music and stuff like that, the processional music."
"He's obsessed with his music," Harry said. "So the two of them have been slaving away, getting everything right. So it's fantastic, really."
Kate seems like she was born for royalty.

Before her wedding day, nerves are natural for any bride. Kate Middleton admitted her own pre-wedding jitters yesterday, during her final public appearance with Prince William before their wedding.
Despite the rain, Kate looked remarkably polished in her navy suit, while touring the East Lancashire town of Darwin and greeting members of the crowd of 5,000 who had gathered.
Amanda Wood, a 49-year-old Asda grocery store employee, asked the bride how she is feeling.
"I asked her if she was nervous about her wedding. And she said 'Yes of course I am.' Then I told her she's beautiful," Wood told The Daily Mirror.
A few weeks ago, ABC reported that William also admitted a creeping nervousness. "I was telling everyone when I did the rehearsals the other day and my knees started going, tapping quite nervously," adding, "It's quite a daunting prospect but very exciting, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it."
In just 17 days, 2 billion people worldwide will watch as Kate walks down the aisle at Westminster Abbey to marry her fiancée.
Yesterday, upon greeting Margaret and Alwyn Davis, an elderly couple from Blackburn, Kate noted the rapidly-approaching April 29th date. Margaret recounted the interaction to The Daily Mirror, saying, "We said hello. And I said to her I wish you all the best with your wedding. And she said 'Yes I can't believe it's coming very soon now.'

Prince William and Kate have chosen two choirs, one orchestra, and two fanfare teams to perform their music at their Wedding Service. The Choir of Westminster Abbey, the Chapel Royal Choir, the London Chamber Orchestra, and the Fanfare Team from the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, as well as the State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry will be performing. Wouldn't it be a treat if we could all have that! Wow!

Both Prince William and Kate have taken time to hand select the music for their Service, which will include a number of well known hymns, choral works, and even some specially-commissioned pieces.

During the reception, Claire Jones, the Official Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales will perform.

2 Days! Royal Wedding!

We are so excited for the Royal Wedding! 2 Days until the big day! There is so much secrecy surrounding the intricate details of the wedding, but there is also a TON of information that is being released regarding William and Kate's wedding details.

As we have mentioned before, anyone who is looking to be married within the next year or two should definitely watch the ceremony-- they will be setting the trends for upcoming weddings!

Today, we will focus on the floral arrangements that Prince William and Kate have selected for their ceremony. They've chosen to work with London-based floral designer Shane Connolly and his team of florists to design their wedding arrangements. He is known for creating unique displays, so be sure to pay special attention to his work! The specifics of the arrangements have yet to be released, although, we do know that eight 20 foot high trees will be included in the ceremony. How unique! Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that! After the wedding, all of the floral arrangements will be on display for public viewing.

Vegetarian and Gluten Free Easter

Here at Grand Volute Ballrooms, we strive to meet the needs of our customers-- whatever they may need! We often have individuals with special dietary needs; we are dedicated to create quality meals despite the dietary restrictions of anyone! The most common dietary requests that we have are related to vegetarian and gluten-free meals. Are you planning an Easter meal, wanting to meet the dietary needs of your loved ones?

Consider eggplant parmesan, or a pasta dish (with vegetarian sauce, and of course, no meat) for your vegetarian guests. For sides, vegetables and fruits are, of course, fair game, as well as vegetarian rice (be sure that there is no chicken stock added).

Gluten-free individuals can consume meat, as long as it is not stuffed, or marinated in a soy based marinade. Most sides, as long as there are no wheat or soy products are fine for gluten-free guests.

You may consider simply asking your guests what they would choose if they were planning the meal-- go with their ideas! Try something new. They will be honored that you are willing to try their own foods!

Cooking for individuals with special dietary needs does not need to be overwhelming. Try to enjoy it; use it as an opportunity to create a more unique meal than what your family is used to. Chances are, your vegetarian and gluten-free family and friends will be honored by this decision, and the rest of your guests will enjoy a change in your traditional meal!

Easter Brunch

At our house Easter is synonymous with brunch. It is probably my favorite meal to serve guests. With a little planning most things can be prepared the night before. I have included one of my previous brunch menus. I hope you enjoy and please let me know how everything turned out.

SPRINGTIME QUICHE
6 asparagus spears, blanched
1 teaspoon unsalted butter
1/2 cup onion, chopped
6 slices bacon, crumbled
1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
2 tablespoons flour
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, grated
1 9 inch pie shell

Preheat oven 400 degree.
Melt butter in a heavy skillet over medium heat.
Saute onion 5 min. or until tender.
Transfer onion and next 3 ingredients to a bowl.
combine eggs, milk and nutmeg in another bowl. Season with salt to taste and stir in onion mixture.
Pour into pie shell and bake 25-35 min. or until center is set.

BERRY CREPES WITH ORANGE SAUCE
1 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup fresh sliced strawberries
1 tablespoon sugar
9 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup honey
3/4 cup orange juice
8 pre-made crepes

Combine berries and sugar in a small bowl; set aside
To prepare sauce, beat cream cheese and honey until light; slowly beat in orange juice.
Spoon about 1/2 cup of berry filling in center of 1 crepe. spoon about 1 tablespoon sauce over berries.
Roll up; place on warmed serving plate and repeat with remaining crepes. Drizzle any remaining sauce over crepes.

Royal Wedding Cake!

Looking for the next big thing in terms of the wedding cake for your special day? The Royal Wedding will be leading the way this year as far as wedding trends go, and you can count on us, as far as being sure that you're well informed!

The Prince has chosen a Chocolate Biscuit Cake for the special day. What is a Chocolate Biscuit Cake? In England, biscuits are, of course, cookies. The cake consists of pieces of vanilla cookies in thick chocolate.

This cake will be served in addition to the traditional fruit cake. Both will be prepared by McVities Bakery, which has been responsible for creating the royal cakes for quite some time-- since 1893, with the marriage of George V.

Want to try it? A recipe is below. This recipe is very similar-- but not exact-- to the recipe that Prince William has requested.

Chocolate Biscuit Cake

Start to finish: 3½ hours (30 minutes active). Servings: 12.
The royal family prefers McVitie’s brand Rich Tea Biscuits for their chocolate biscuit cakes, but any firm butter cookie can be used in this intensely rich and chocolatey no-bake treat. Cover and refrigerate any leftovers; the cake gets better with time. Recipe by Alison Ladman.
For the cake:
7-ounce package
butter tea biscuits
(sold in the cookie aisle)
1 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons honey
4 tablespoons
(½ stick) butter
16 ounces (about 2½ cups) bittersweet chocolate
bits
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the glaze:
2 tablespoons butter
¼ cup heavy cream
6 ounces (about 1 cup) bittersweet chocolate

Coat a 7- or 8-inch round springform pan with cooking spray.
To make the cake, break up the biscuits into ¼- to ½-inch pieces with your hands; you want chunks, not crumbs.
In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the cream, honey and butter. Microwave on high for 1½ minutes, or until bubbling. Add the chocolate, and stir until melted and the mixture is smooth. Stir in the vanilla, then the crumbled biscuits. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan, using the back of the spoon to smooth the top. Gently tap the pan on the counter to eliminate any air pockets.
Refrigerate for 3 hours, or until thoroughly chilled.
Once the cake is chilled, prepare the glaze. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter and cream. When the mixture reaches a boil, remove it from the heat and add the chocolate, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
Carefully remove the sides from the springform pan (you may need to slide a paring knife around the inside upper edge to ensure the sides come away cleanly from the cake). Invert the cake onto a wire rack, then remove the bottom of the pan from the cake. Set the rack over parchment paper to catch drips.
Pour the glaze evenly over the cake, allowing it to drip down and completely cover the top and sides. Allow to firm up, then transfer to a serving plate. Refrigerate leftovers.

Guest Book Ideas

Many couples want a way to remember all of the individuals who spent their special day with them, so they purchase a frilly guest book that simply gets tucked away and looked at once every five or ten years... what's the point in that?! For the couple that is looking for a more useful guest book, that is a piece of art, rather than a closet-space killer, check out the ideas below!

One idea, is to purchase, or ask a woodworker friend to create a blank puzzle for you. Have each guest sign the puzzle, assemble it, and have it framed or preserved in one way or another.

Another idea, is to purchase something that the two of you love-- have the guests sign this, instead. This couple chose to purchase a guitar, and have guests sign it.

Another idea, would be to have a poster made-- anyone with a few skills in photoshop would be able to help. Ask your engagement photographer if he or she may be able to help. This couple chose to have a concert flyer-like poster created, and had their guests sign it. This would be so great hanging on a wall anywhere in the house!

Many people opt for the fingerprint idea-- usually with a tree. Have your guests each stamp their finger on a picture of a blank tree, and sign their name. A more unique version of this, is to have guests stamp their finger as balloons! This couple chose to have their balloons carrying away the bridal vehicle. We think a cool idea would be to have the balloons lift the house from "Up!."

Regardless of what you choose to do, be sure that it is something that reflects you as a couple! After all, it is your day, isn't it?

These candy buttons are super cute, and easy to make! These are customizable to weddings-- simply dye the candy to match your wedding colors! Find a mold for candy buttons, available at craft stores, or specialty baking outlets online, and press your filling into the mold! Easy! Consider these for baby showers too! Very Cute! The recipe for the candy filling is available below.

Ingredients

1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 tablespoon butter, softened
3 cups confectioners' sugar
2 drops peppermint oil
any color food coloring paste (optional)

Directions

In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, butter, and confectioner's sugar. Mix in peppermint oil. Color as desired with food coloring paste, or leave white.
Roll mixture into small balls, and place on waxed paper. Flatten with a fork dipped in confectioners' sugar. Let dry for about 2 hours on waxed paper, then freeze or refrigerate.

Mix 1 1/2 oz tequila, 1 1/2 oz melon liqueur, 1 oz fresh sour mix, and 1 oz lime juice, shake, and pour into a margarita or rocks glass (or even a coffee cup!-- who cares! It's St. Patty's Day!!) The great thing about daffodils, is that they come in a variety of sizes and shades, so they look great alone, as well! In our last post, we introduced you to Reserve Wine Bar- a great date destination for the couple looking for an upscale night out on the the town. Today, we want to introduce you to something a little different: The Electric Cheetah!

New Segments: Monthly Flowers!

Here at the Grand Volute Ballrooms, we are always looking for ways to make your life as the bride and groom-to-be easier. This month, we are beginning something new-- a monthly flower segment. Each month has its own flower-- February, surprisingly, is not the rose! The flower of February is the violet! Now, if you're like us, you might be thinking "So what?!-- How am I supposed to incorporate violets into my wedding?!" Well, after doing some research, we were pretty surprised at the ideas that others have done. Have your flower girl sprinkle violets, or incorporate them into your bouquet. Maybe February is a special month for you-- incorporate violets into your wedding flowers in memory of a passed friend or family member who's birthday was in February, for example. Either way, we were especially impressed with some of the arrangements that some brides had designed for their weddings. Valentine's Roses

How do you choose a rose and know that you are buying a good, quality
fresh product? That's a great question, especially with Valentine's Day
right around the corner. No one wants to look at a vase of roses with
their heads drooped over on February 15. Many things factor into the
quality of fresh flowers on a high volumn week. The growers will want to
cut as much product as they can, and sometimes that means they are sending
out immature blooms. Those would be the very tight, small, hard roses you
sometime see. We florists call those "bullets" and they never open. At the
wholesale level, in order to handle the volume of product, the roses may
sit in a tightly packed box in the cooler a few days longer than normal. A
rose can sit a couple of days without water, but too long and it will
affect it's ability to draw water up the stem. The signs of a rose under
stress would be dry, blackened or fallen foliage and a veiny, wrinkley look
to the petal. A rose under stress can look okay sitting in a florist
cooler, but once it comes out into room temperature, it will droop it's
head. Look for roses with bright green fresh looking foliage, no dark
spots on it's stem and a bloom that is just starting to open, but yet firm
in the center. Shop with that knowledge and enjoy your Valentine's Day.

Engagement Session Attire-- What do I wear?

InFrame Bride Magazine is THE resource to find answers about all things concerning the world of wedding photography. Not sure what to wear for your engagement session? Here are some tips:

Keep it simple. Avoid busy clothing with distracting patterns. If your shirt could talk, it should be whispering. Steer clear of bold stripes; logos or ruffles that can add unwanted bulk. Dark colors are most flattering, but black can wash out a pale complexion. Opt for navy blue instead.

Be yourself. Don’t reinvent yourself for the photo shoot. The photos should reflect your personal style. Wear something in which you feel comfortable and confident.

Make-up is a must. At a minimum, consider a concealer or light powder to even out your skin tone; you’ll be happy with the result. Add in a touch of mascara to lengthen your lashes.

Compliment each other. Remember fourth grade, when you and your best girl friend wore matching outfits? This is not fourth grade. Pick a color scheme that both your wardrobes can accommodate. Coordinate your outfits together, but leave the matching fanny packs at home.

Mix it up. Changing accessories during the shoot adds variety. Try subtle wardrobe changes like adding a scarf or switching out your necklace or shoes to add some character. Remember to keep it simple.

Molten Lava Cake Recipe!

Let's face it-- on Monday, every restaurant from here to there, and everywhere in-between will be packed with couples celebrating Valentines Day. Try something different this year, and stay in! Now, this doesn't mean staying in and doing the same-old, same old, it's staying in, and creating a romantic wonderland for you and your sweetie.

Cook her (or him!) a lovely meal; try something new, or your significant other's favorite. Get a bottle of wine, buy some flowers, light some candles, eat some chocolate... it can be wonderful! And much cheaper, if you do it the right way!

We have a wonderful molten lava cake for you to try, if you need ideas. It is "restaurant good"-- possibly better! Surprise your darling for a dessert at home, instead of at the restaurant, even if you do go out! Seriously-- it's that good. Let us know how you like it, if you try it!

MOLTEN LAVA CAKE

4 ounces unsalted butter

1 bar (4 ounces) Ghirardelli 60% cocoa Bittersweet baking bar

2 whole eggs

2 egg yolk

1/3 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon cake flour

1. Melt butter and chocolate in double boiler

2. Whip eggs, yolks, sugar and vanilla with a mixer for about 10 minutes on high speed

3. Fold melted chocolate and butter into egg mixture

4. Fold in flour until just combined

5. Butter and sugar 4- 6oz ramekins, then spoon mixture into ramekins

6. Bake at 450 degrees for about 9-10 minutes. The center will be quite soft but the top and sides will be set

7. Let sit out of the oven for about 5 minutes, then unmold onto a plate.

8. Serve with a few raspberries and a dollop of whipped cream.

A ‘How-To’ Guide to Choosing the Perfect Wedding Photographer. Simply follow these three steps brought to you by InFrame Bride Magazine.

1. Portfolio. Investigate portfolios. Flip through the pages of this magazine and make a note of the images that catch your eye. Pay close attention to the mood the images portray and trust your own impressions. You know what you like; let that be your guide.

Follow-up by perusing the photographers’ websites. View more than one wedding for each photographer (a great photographer will capture inspiring images of every wedding). Keep in mind photographers post their most recent work on their blog. Before moving on, make a list of your top 10 favorite photographers.

2. Price. Decide on your budget. Your wedding photography is as important as your wedding gown! As a rule of thumb, wedding planners advise spending 20-30% of your total wedding budget on photography. Make it a priority. Don’t be afraid to make compromises with your wedding budget. If you are in love with a specific photographer’s work but feel their price is out of reach, be flexible and play with the numbers. Could you cut back on your wedding favors or go with a more cost-friendly flower that is still just as beautiful? In the end, you won’t regret the results; your wedding memories are priceless, and your images will last a lifetime. Now, narrow down the list to your top 5 favorite photographers.

3. Personality. Set up appointments. Meet with your short list of favorite photographers. So, you are engaged! Congratulations! I am sure you are having fun choosing your locations, picking out flowers and decorations, and maybe you have already booked your photographer and DJ...but did you already book your videographer?

You do not want to wait to pick a videographer, as the best tend to book up the quickest. Many people forget about this vendor until just before the wedding day, and by then, it may be too late to get the one you want.

People tend to think that photography is most important for capturing the day, and then maybe they will add video. I urge you to reconsider. There is a good chance that once the day is over (and trust me, that day will fly by) that you will want to be able to look back on your day using more than just photographs. You will want to be able to relive the special moments in between the shots that your photographer took. You will want to be able to hear your toasts again, your vows again, and all the well wishes and special words people spoke. You will be able to do this if you have a video.

I few things to keep in mind when choosing your videographer:

-Take a look at many samples of their work.

-Many wedding videographers now shoot in HD, but not all of them do - something to keep in mind when shopping around.

-Remember that most of the time, a good videographer is going to come along with added cost. This is important to keep as a priority, as it is one of few things you will have left after your special day.

As we head into a new wedding season we begin to see trends flourish. In 2011 we are expecting to see more monogram, initial, and gobo lighting. Although this trend started back in the 90’s we are seeing technology create an endless amount of possibilities to monogram lighting options. They are elegant, understated, versatile, and a dramatic visual reminder of your new life together.

The basic description of a monogram light is a two to three initial design, names, and or picture made up by the bride and groom to suit their desired needs.

The location of your monogram light also can be decided on what works best for you and your venue. In a recent wedding reception at The Grand Volute Ballrooms in Lowell, MI we were able to project our gobo lighting in a very stylish fashion. We had many options at The Grand Volute due to the large size of their ballrooms. We had so many possibilities! Your monogram can be used on your dance floor, behind the head table, above the cake, or on any wall visible to all guests.

If you are looking for that extra something for your reception, you may want to look into the idea of having a monogram light at your event. It may just add that extra something to bring the whole look of your reception ballroom together.

Questions to Ask Potential DJ Companies... Part Two!

Here are the rest of the questions that each person should be sure to inquire of before hiring a DJ company for their big day.

4. Can I meet my DJ before my big day?

1. This is very important as your DJ’s personality is what makes or breaks your evening. Light shows are nice, sound systems are important, but if their only sales points are they have the loudest system or fanciest lights in the industry, then they may be compensating for unprofessional or untrained DJs. The DJ does two very critical things for you. Number one he or she coordinates the flow of the evening with all the vendors and number two he or she makes sure people have fun during the dancing.

5. Have you worked with my facility before?

1. The DJ must be well versed with the facilities set-up requirements, load in procedures, flow of the evening, and ending times. One of the BEST forms of references for your DJ should come from your facility. They see hundreds of DJs and are probably your best source for a recommendation.

6. Do you pay employees a 1099 or sub-contractors?

1. Many larger DJ companies actually use other smaller DJ companies when they book-up. The draw-back is then you pay too much for a potentially inferior service. Make sure that your company does not sub-contract their DJs.

7. Do I need to sign an agreement?
YES! You need to work with a company with a contract. Remember that contract protects you as much as them! It says they promise to be there for your event! With that in mind the quality of the literature they give you is a direct reflection on their customer service and professionalism. If they had really bad copies for song lists, or hand write your plans on a cocktail napkin, you can bet your evening will not go as you planned!

The most important thing to remember when planning your wedding is to have fun! The DJ should not be a stress for you to overcome. Simply look for the signs that you are hiring a trusted and professional and you stand a GREAT, chance at having a Stress-Free wedding day of which dreams are made!

As promised, today we will continue our DJ Feature with questions that everyone should ask a potential DJ before hiring him or her. 1. How long have you been in business?

1/3 of DJ companies go out of business every year. Considering most engagements are now 18 months long and you should be booking a DJ about a year in advance, you stand a 1 in 3 chance that you might be scrambling trying to find a new DJ company the month of your wedding, if your company goes out of business. The longer a company has been in business the more likelihood that they will be in business a year from now. Be careful that you don’t fall for the “We have 10 years combined experience,” sales gimmick. Some companies will hide the fact that they have 8 people working for them with a year or two of experience at most between them.

2. Do you have back-up DJ's and equipment?

Complete Music is one of the few companies that has a paid manager on-call with an entire system ready to go whenever we have event out. This is different than companies that say we have extra DJs. Consider this scenario, your DJ gets into an accident or gets sick the day of your wedding. If the DJ Company calls one of their guys that has plans that day, then after they beg them to work and leave their family picnic in the middle. That DJ still has to gather equipment, has no information about your event, and will most likely have a bad attitude when they show up to entertain on your big day. Complete Music’s on-call managers are prepared and even carry their tuxes with them so if they get a call they can be at your event in a moments notice.

3. Do you have an office?

Believe it or not this is very important because most DJs are part-time companies and those are the ones that go out of business, have bad reputations, and often very poor training and business skills.

Check back on Friday for the additional three question to be sure to ask!! These are priceless questions, and are absolutely crucial to ensuring a quality experience with your DJ.

Choosing a DJ for your big day can be very confusing. Most Brides and Grooms have never actually had to hire a DJ before, so they have no idea what to even ask a prospective company they are interviewing.
About 95% of brides that call Complete Music’s office ask the same first question… “How much do you charge?” Although price is an important factor in choosing a company, if you base your decision solely on price you will be disappointed.

According to Modern Bride Magazine, the Knott and a few other national wedding sources:
Before their wedding, brides ranked the entertainment 9^th in importance but AFTER their wedding those same brides surveyed ranked the entertainment as the number one most important thing in their wedding! Considering, on average only 5% of your wedding budget is going to be spent on the entertainment, it is critical that brides and grooms know what to ask companies and know what to look for in finding a professional service.

Lanterns are a wonderful addition for depth and light for night-time weddings. They can be used both indoors and out, and with a few adornments, are easily adapted to any season. They add warmth to photography, and to the atmosphere of your wedding... we just love them!

They can easily be made at home, with a bit of time and dedication-- the hardest part is finding the jars!

Consider purchasing a bulk package of canning jars, and filling them 1/4 full with a material that suits your color choice. Choose sand for browns, salt or sugar for whites, and add dye to suit any other color. Be sure to do some math, in order to make one large batch of lantern "filler" so that each lantern is the same shade. Consider making lantern filler in several different colors, in order to truly match your color scheme. Place one candle (or electric candle, if it's windy) in each jar, and viola! Easy!

Have an aisle to light up? Line it with lanterns. Consider placing a jar on each table as a center piece! Want to hang a few (or a lot)? Affix wire securely around the rim of the jar, and add a handle to the top, also made of wire. This project is so simple and the finished product is so clean and elegant!

Take a minute to Google a few pictures of "candy buffets" and you'll notice a few things.

1- They're incredibly popular

2- There is a right way, and a wrong way, of incorporating the candy buffet into your party.

Candy buffets are wonderful additions to any party, whether it be a wedding, class reunion, graduation party, bridal shower, baby shower. Everyone loves candy, so the time is always right to have a buffet.

Go big-- put a lot of candy in a small space. This will look much more impressive to guests, and could actually save you some money in candy costs, because it discourages "grazing" guests.
